MY JOURNEY LEARNING TO CODE AT TIIDELAB PRE-FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

My journey learning to write codes started only just a few weeks ago, and I must say I’m amazed at the knowledge I’ve gathered in such a short time. This was only possible having my fellow TiideLab Pre-Fellowship Developers, TiideLab instructors and goods friends in Tech who constantly share useful materials, answer my questions and guide me on my path to becoming a Successful Developer.

Learning to write codes has been challenging and also has been an interesting ride so far.

So here is a rundown of how it’s been so far at the fellowship.

The fellowship started with a virtual onboarding ceremony. Mr. Shamsudeen Aderoju (Program Coordinator — TiideLab) emphasized on the need for fellows to make the most of the classes’ in order to be champions in the software tech space. The onboarding session exposed fellows to the mode of operation, assessment methods and reward systems for the program; all in a bid to set a pace for the journey ahead.

In the first week, we were taught “Basic HTML and CSS” a course that explained the materials, tools and resources needed to work effectively. We were taught HTML Tags, Attributes, Properties, Text formatting, Styling using CSS and how to apply them, conducted by: Mr. Malik Mukhtar who is a Full-stack Developer.

At the end of the week, we were able to build “A Tribute page”.

This isn’t a lot I know. It was my starting point and it surely means a lot to me.

The second and third week at TiideLab were focused on “CSS Styling” Flexbox, Media Query and how to build a responsive Navbar & Layout. This was taken by Mr. Mr. Ayodele Samuel Adebayo who is also a Fullstack Developer.

With the knowledge gained, we were able to build a Portfolio website for ourselves. Now this here was another great step for me. My creative skills were beginning to reveal itself.

My Portfolio

At the end of the program, we were given a final project to test how far we’ve grown and learned. I chose to build an E-commerce website and so far my work shows how far I’ve come in learning to code.

Spending hours thinking of how to achieve a particular design trying to position codes the best way I can and actually achieving the design shows how well of a problem solver I can be. There’s no better way to test your problem-solving skills.

One issue I’ve faced in my journey to self-reliance so far is using git & git-hub and this has been a major challenge during the course of the program.

As a matter of fact, I got kicked out of the program after week one as part of the unserious participants who failed to submit assignments before deadlines. It was discouraging at first seeing others in the program scale through and not making it past the first stage as a result of not knowing how to use my tools properly. I desperately wanted to be part of this program because all I wanted to do at this stage of my life is to learn to write codes and grow, and being part of the fellowship was going to speed up this process. So in order to get back into the program, I learnt and pushed my codes to Github anyways and after explaining my issues and pleading, I was accepted back in the program. Funny right?

I thought I had overcome this challenge after successfully pushing my codes to git-hub in weeks 1 & 2. Having to host my final project on the web was when I realized I was still stuck up here.

Moving forward, I got videos materials of which I am studying and also dedicating time to practices as much as possible because I believe one can achieve anything with persistence and hard work.

I cannot end this without recognizing Mr. Shamsudeen Aderoju (Program Coordinator — Tiidelab) and the entire TIIDELAB team. I am grateful for the opportunity.

Thank you.
